Summerville Homes for Sale

Summerville, South Carolina is in Dorchester County with some portions in Berkeley and Charleston counties. It is part of the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Summerville came following the American Revolutionary War. Development began in the area when plantation owners from the Charleston area began to move to Summerville as a way to escape some of the insects and resulting fever from insect bites.  The town became official in 1847, and today has approximately 50,200 people who call it home.

Summerville boasts many historical areas and buildings that history lovers will enjoy viewing. Some of these include Middleton Place, the Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site, the Ashley River Road, and the Summerville Historic District. All of these have been named to the National Register of Historic Places. Prospective homebuyers will be interested in the annual Flowertown Festival which began in 1972, hosted by the Summerville Family YMCA as a way to support their health and wellness programs. It is also one of the largest arts and crafts festival in South Carolina. Some 200 artists from all over the U.S. display their works at the festival. Summerville sees some 200,000 visitors during the three days of Flowertown Festival. Starting in April, the Summerville Farmers Market sells fresh produce, local goods, and artisan food every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
